An agreement between the ”la Caixa” Foundation and IC3 was established on November 9, 2010 with the aim of creating a network comprising eight stations for climate research and observation (sites). The sites will be located in critical or particularly sensitive natural systems due to their emplacement, physiographic characteristics or peculiarity of their ecosystems. The network will be a way to directly observe climate change and its impacts on a regional scale, when a particular site is considered, and on a global scale, when the entire network is considered.
This network will become an international benchmark, while in Spain all relevant data will be openly accessible. The data will be entered in near real-timeinternational data bases, which will give a better understanding of the interrelation between the climate system and biosphere processes. The sites will be located in seven Spanish autonomous regions (Catalonia, Basque Country, Galicia, Castile and Leon, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands), and set up is due to be completed on December 31, 2012, with the project initially lasting until December 2015. The network has been created with the aim of promoting interdisciplinary collaboration with other scientists interested in climate and hydrology research. Accordingly, temporary research stays will be promoted.
